West Burton Power Station Art Project.
Artist Dana Olarescu has been working hard putting together a project to mark the closure of West Burton Power Station.
“I am a socially engaged artist commissioned by Keele University and Urban Wilderness to co-create an artwork around the decommissioning of West Burton A power station. This is part of a wider research project called ‘Decommissioning the Twentieth Century’ which looks at how communities around different power stations in the UK (Fawley in Southampton, Chatterley Whitfield in Stoke-on-Trent, West Burton in Gainsborough) can influence how stakeholders plan future decommissions.
I am a Romanian born and London-based artist who grew up in a similar environment; imagining what went on inside the cooling towers was incredibly fun and exciting as I was fascinated by their grandeur. I started working on this project in July 2021, and I am really interested in hearing what locals think about West Burton, and most importantly, how you would like the landscape to transform once it ceases generating. Would you like to keep the building and find other uses for it, or have it demolished and re-imagine other uses of the landscape? What could it be replaced by?
So far, I have spoken to people on the streets in Gainsborough, in Sturton-le-Steeple, ran a stall at the market buying memories, and the next stage is running workshops at x-church."
URGENT UPDATE! PLEASE NOTE. THE PROCESSION ON 11 SEPTEMBER WILL NO LONGER TAKE PLACE. KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED FOR A DEMOLITION PARTY AT X-CHURCH WHERE YOU WILL BE INVITED TO MAKE POWER STATION REPLICAS DURING THE DAY, AND DESTROY THEM IN THE EVENING.
Dana has set out below the programme for her three workshops:
"28 August: The first one is an invitation to share any memories you may have of the station. Did you work there? Are you working there now? Do you live nearby or pass by and what do the buildings mean to you? What do you think should happen to the site next? Please come along and share your thoughts. It will be a fun day of hands-on making, drawing, maybe even eating a cake shaped as West Burton. All ages welcome.
4 September: The second one is again an open invitation to adults and children and is very much hands on. Come and design banners, costumes, and props in preparation for a celebratory parade to say goodbye to the station planned for the following Saturday.
11 September: Last, we meet up at x-Church and set off the parade taking a public path towards the station. Costumes will be worn, banners carried, and music played. Four legged friends are welcome too. I hope to see you there. Let’s give West Burton A a well-deserved send off." PLEASE NOTE THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW CANCELLED AND WILL BE REPLACED AT A LATER DATE. WATCH THIS SPACE FOR MORE DETAILS.
All workshops take place at the x-church on Saturdays, Aug 28th, Sept 4th and Sept 11th, 12.00 to 16.00 and are free of charge and materials are provided. For more information contact: [email protected]
