Charles Baines School Science Garden Appeal
Can you help the Charles Baines Community Primary School in Gainsborough? The Year Six Class is appealing for help with their project to redevelop the schools science garden. Below is a letter they have sent out to local businesses – maybe you have some items they are looking for?
“We are writing to you during these unprecedented times, in the hope that you will be able to help us to achieve our goal of promoting the health and well-being of the children at Charles Baines Primary School. We are a group of five Year 6 pupils, who have recently returned to school, in what is a very strange and surreal environment. In less than six weeks, we will be transitioning to secondary school and our aim is to leave a legacy to the rest of the children, so that they have something to remember us by.
Our planned project is to redesign and redevelop our school science garden, so that it becomes a purposeful learning environment for everyone to enjoy. The current science garden is overgrown and has not been utilised to its full potential (see images below), however it is a blank canvas, which holds endless possibilities.
The majority of children at our school and schools across the country will have had over half a school year spent at home and we are concerned at the impact that this may have on their emotional and social wellbeing. The key purpose of our project is to offer children a calm and relaxing space, in which to spend time, socialise and reflect. In addition to this, we recognise the educational benefits of having an area for wildlife to thrive in. Never before has it been more important to have a ‘real life’ curriculum: life skills, such as gardening, caring for our environment and construction are just some of the benefits that will be gained from having such a space. Whilst we fully understand that the current financial situation is extremely difficult, we would really appreciate any offer of support by donating supplies that could be of benefit to our project. Here are some suggestions of equipment required:
Plants and compost
Gardening tools and gloves
Paving slabs/ stones/ gravel
Wind chimes/ mobiles/ outdoor sensory equipment
Weed membrane and pegs
Watering cans/ hose
We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you for taking the time to read our letter. If you are able to donate anything to our cause, please contact our teacher, Mrs Malia-Wallwork either by e-mail: [email protected] or by phone 01427 613812.
